Robert Downey Jr. has reportedly signed on to join the Assassin’s Creed movie cast in the role of Leonardo da Vinci.
The rumour, originally reported by Moviepilot but since removed, suggests that the upcoming film could be set around the events of Assassin’s Creed II or its tie-ins, where the famous inventor appeared opposite Ezio Auditore.
Since the story has been taken down, there’s no way to verify whether or not the rumour is true. Given Downey’s penchant for bringing a comedic twist to his roles however, you could see how he’d do well as Assassin’s Creed’s imagining of da Vinci.
Michael Fassbender remains attached to the upcoming film, presumably to star in the leading role. He’s previously made it clear that while the team will look to the games for inspiration, they’re keen to mix it up a bit and tell and original story.
Justin Kurzel, who Fassbender has collaborated with previously, was attached to direct the film in April. When asked what he felt the director would bring to the project, Fassbender said, “I just think that there’s one thing Justin should be doing, and that’s directing. I know that from working with him on Macbeth. He’s just fantastic in terms of his vision. Adam, the DP that he works with, is amazing. They’ve got a great shorthand — that’s essential. He’s fantastic with actors and each department. He’s a real heavyweight.”
Assassin’s Creed is slated to hit screens on May 22, 2015.
